Seimei Shrine is a shrine dedicated to Abe no Seimei, an onmy\u014dji who was active during the mid-Heian period.
It is said that in the 4th year of the Kan'\u014d era (1007)\u2014two years after Seimei\u2019s death\u2014the temple was founded at its current location, believed to be the site of Seimei\u2019s former residence, by order of Emperor Ichij\u014d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is said that the temple grounds at the time of its founding covered a vast area bounded by Horikawa-dori to the east, Kuromon-dori to the west, Motoseiganji-dori to the north, and Nakadachiuri-dori to the south; however, they gradually shrunk due to the ravages of war\u2014including the \u014cnin War\u2014and the urban redevelopment carried out by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. From the Edo period onward, parishioners undertook efforts to redevelop the grounds, and by 1950 (Sh\u014dwa 25), the precincts had been expanded to the point where they faced Horikawa-dori.
