shrine honouring war dead
Gokin Shrine is located near Nijo Castle. Many people visit the shrine every weekday and holiday to pray for good fortune.
Entering Nishinotoin Dori from Oike Dori and proceeding through a residential area, you will see a golden torii gate. The shrine is easily recognizable by the lanterns that read "Gokin-jinja Shrine.
The precincts of the temple are small, with the main shrine in the center, a place to hang ema (votive picture tablet) on the right, and a store on the left. The bell in the main hall is wrapped in cloth and makes little sound.
If you just want to visit, you can enter the temple grounds 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
If you would like to purchase a charm or talisman, visit between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm when the store is open.
On the three days of the week, even more people visit, and it gets so crowded that security guards have to man the lines.
If you are traveling to arrive at 10:00 a.m., the trick is to get in line early in the morning, as you may have to wait 30 minutes or more after arriving at Gokin Shrine.
