Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Art Museum" exhibits traditional crafts from the Edo and Meiji periods.

The Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Art Museum was the first museum in Japan to begin exhibiting artifacts from the Edo and Meiji periods exclusively. The building is located a little further back from the main street on the way down Sanneizaka from Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

The works on display are mainly lacquerware, metal crafts, pottery, and sculptures. The works on display are so gorgeous that they will blow away your image of "crafts as plain and old-fashioned," and even if you have no specialized knowledge, you can enjoy them just by looking at them. Many of the works were made during the period when exchange with Europe and the U.S. was flourishing, so many of them are characterized by their cute Western-style designs.

Tsudaro, a restaurant and bar where you can experience Gion in the Taisho era

Tsudaro is a renovated machiya (townhouse) built in 1913, with a single zelkova counter and a tea room for two or three people on the first floor, and 8- and 10-square-meter seating areas on the second floor. Depending on the course, it is also possible to invite a maiko for a tatami room experience or to dine while listening to a live shamisen (three-stringed Japanese banjo) performance. This is a recommended spot where you can experience authentic traditional Kyoto culture.
