■Nicot & Mam

Nicotto & Mamu is a doughnut shop located near the Kyoto International Manga Museum. The machiya-style exterior of the shop, tucked away in a residential area off Karasuma-dori into Oshikoji-dori, is a landmark. When open, there is a standing sign, and the log house-style interior makes for a relaxing atmosphere.

The showcase just inside the store is filled with colorful doughnuts. The standard "plain" donuts covered with powdered sugar and the "chocolate" donuts coated with chocolate and topped with nuts are must-try items.

The matcha green tea doughnuts, typical of Kyoto, change daily, and include the orthodox "matcha" doughnut with a moderate sweetness and the "thick matcha" doughnut with plenty of Uji green tea kneaded into the doughnut. About five types of seasonal menu items are available each season, so be sure to check back for the latest information!

Hitsuji Donuts is located on the south side of the Kyoto Imperial Palace at the intersection of Isigawa-dori and Tominokoji-dori. The store is open only three days a week on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, so timing is crucial for purchasing. The Western-style exterior, covered with bricks and large windowpanes, is a landmark, and while waiting to enter the store, visitors can watch donuts being made.

The doughnut lineup includes fluffy ones made with natural yeast and ones with sprouted brown rice that have an addictive, chewy texture. Many of the flavors are simple, such as millet sugar and soybean flour, and the appeal of these donuts is the gentle taste that gives you a sense of relief.

The restaurant serves both eat-in and take-out. For eat-in, you can choose to have a set with a drink. When taking out, the trick is to shake the bag before eating, so that the entire doughnut is covered with powder such as kinako (soybean flour). This donut shop is definitely worth a visit when traveling to Kyoto on the weekend.
