The two recommended spots around Kitano Tenmangu Shrine!

KYOTREAT Editors
Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and is famous for its plum blossoms in spring. It is a popular sightseeing spot in Kyoto, but some people may think, "After visiting the shrine, let's go to Kinkakuji or Kiyomizu-dera Temple," or "There doesn't seem to be any other sightseeing spot nearby, so why take the time to go all the way there..."?
In fact, however, there are many temples in the vicinity of Kitano-Tenmangu Shrine where you can enjoy the Kyoto-like atmosphere and stores where you can eat delicious Japanese sweets! We will now introduce two recommended spots that can be visited within a 10-minute walk from Kitano-Tenmangu Shrine.

Jizoin Temple is located an 8-minute walk from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and a 2-minute walk from Kitano Shiraume-cho Station. The temple grounds are secluded, with houses on the right as you enter through the gate, a cemetery on the left, and a hall at the end of the central approach.

The highlight of Jizoin Temple is the camellia seen from late February to early April. Camellia trees are planted on both sides of the approach to the temple, and bright spring colors such as red, white, and peach adorn the grounds. In particular, the "five-colored double-flowered camellia," with flowers of different shades on a single tree, is a must-see.

There is also the grave of Rihei Amanoya, a character from "Chushingura," a popular kabuki and ningyo joruri (puppet drama) performance. This temple has a long history, having been built in 726 by Gyoki in Settsu Province at the behest of Emperor Shomu, and moved to its current location in 1589 after moving from place to place.

Dorayaki specialty store with delicious sweet red bean paste: Boinome

Boinome is a dorayaki specialty store located a 3-minute walk from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and Kitano Shiraume-cho Station, respectively. It is a cozy store in the style of a machi café, where you can purchase take-outs from the window facing the street or sit at the counter inside the store and enjoy dorayaki at your leisure. (As of March 21, 2022, only take-out is available.)

The dorayaki sold at the store has an elegant taste with a moist and fluffy dough sandwiched between gently sweet red bean paste. The red bean paste is made from grains of red bean paste, and the sweetness of the sugar soaks into the core of the large azuki beans. With its simple taste, you can easily eat two or three pieces.

Also, check out the seasonal dorayaki. Try the original dorayaki made with seasonal ingredients, such as Sakura x Cheese in spring and Kabocha Cream Dorayaki in fall.

Address: 1038-22 Kamiyagawa-cho, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto, 602-8384, Japan
