Ice cream is something I crave irresistibly during the hot season.
The author is particularly fond of gelato!
Gelato is an icy treat that originated in Florence, meaning "frozen" in Italian.
Gelato's ingredients include dairy products, fruit juice, water, sugar, stabilizers, and egg whites. These are frozen while being stirred, and the air content is lower than that of ordinary ice cream. The texture is dense and sticky, and the rich flavor of the ingredients can be enjoyed.
I have eaten gelato in Florence and Rome, and I have also eaten gelato and soft-serve ice cream in many places in Japan, but there is also an excellent gelato shop in Kyoto, our hometown, that I would like to share with you!
We will introduce four stores in this issue!

Relocation and opening at the end of March 2022! Tomomi Gelato" is a hot topic now!

The first one we will introduce is "Tomomi Gelato" near Kiyomizu Gojo, which will move to a new location at the end of March 2022 and has been attracting attention as it has been introduced on TV and other media.
We were told that the restaurant usually opens at 13:00, so we waited in front of the restaurant from 12:50 for it to open, but there was already one group waiting.
Upon entering the store, we were told that gelato can be purchased take-out style on the first floor, and parfaits, three kinds of gelato platters, etc. can be ordered at the second floor café, so we decided to have them on the second floor.
What I ordered that day was an assortment of three kinds of gelato, flavors of which are "Pineapple," "Latte TANAHASHI (milk)," and "Shiso Okura" (from left to right in photo).

The "Pineapple" was made from Okinawan snack pineapple. The aroma of pineapple was very gorgeous!
The "milk" is made from Tanahashi Milk in Ikeda-cho, Gifu Prefecture, which has been in business for more than 100 years. The milk is sterilized at 80 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes, which is the same as in the past! The milk! It was a delicious taste.
The "shiso okura" seemed to be made with shiso and okura from a farmer in Kyoto. Perhaps, when you put it in your mouth, you feel a breeze of green perilla! Is there a little vinegar in it? It was a taste with depth, with a hint of sourness and richness that made me think it had a bit of vinegar in it. The texture was smooth, perhaps due to the Okura (Japanese hibiscus rosmarinus). The smooth texture was also pleasant.

And my companion ordered Choco Mint, Latte TANAHASHI (milk), and Sumo (Soldum) (from left to right).
The chocolate mint had a perfect balance of mint and chocolate! The plum flavor was my favorite among the flavors we received this time, as I could enjoy the fruitiness as if I were eating the pulp as is!
Although the portions of each type were not large, the rich flavor of the ingredients was very satisfying.
The "Summer Fruit and Spicy Chai Parfait" that the person sitting next to me was having also looked delicious!
I also wanted to enjoy them at home - so I took out three items that were incredibly delicious: Latte TANAHASHI (milk), Sumomo (sordam), and Kochi Sansho.

You can purchase a set of coolant and a cool bag for 120 yen, so if you don't have time to stop by the café, you can take it home and enjoy it.â

If you visit Shimogamo Shrine, you must stop by! The talented "Yuwado" in Shimogamo-jinja Shrine!
Next up is Tomowado, located at the entrance to the west approach to Shimogamo Jinja Shrine. This is a relatively new store opened in August 2019 by a couple who came to Kyoto from Kumamoto after being fascinated by authentic gelato in Italy.

The most popular item here is the "Milk"! This simple gelato is rich in milk and cream and has a smooth texture!
The "Sicilian Pistachios" were also excellent...they were made from Sicilian Bronte pistachios imported directly from Italy. The pistachio flavor was very pronounced. Another type of chocolate we had was the "Chocolata". Two types of chocolate are used in the milk base, giving it a rich flavor. I enjoyed the texture of the chocolate chips.
They have equipment made in Italy and handcraft and serve 8 to 9 different flavors every day. All flavors are smooth and authentic, with a clean aftertaste that allows you to directly feel the original flavor of the ingredients.

If you are in Machinaka, this is the place to go! SUGiTORA" with excellent parfaits and gelato prepared by patissiers
The next restaurant is SUGiTORA. This restaurant has an excellent location in the alley between Teramachi shopping street and Shinkyogoku shopping street.
Originally, there was a fruit shop called SUGiTORA Fruit Shop in this location in Kawaramachi Sanjo for over 100 years, but it closed in 2008, much to the regret of regular customers. It then returned in 2017 as the gelato shop SUGiTORA.
The owner-chef, Mr. Sugita, once represented Japan in an international sweets competition and won a silver medal while working at a famous hotel in Tokyo, and his innovative parfaits are one of the features of this restaurant.
Gelato can be taken out on the first floor, perfect for eating and walking around, while the second floor is a café space where you can enjoy original parfaits and affogato wine.
There are standard flavors such as "Milk," "Rich Pistachio," "60 Days Chocolate," and "Red Fruit and Earl Grey."

I had the "Red Fruit and Earl Grey," and the fruity and sour taste of the fruit blended perfectly with the aroma of Earl Grey, giving me a unique taste that I could not find anywhere else.
The "Lemongrass with Honey" that I ordered at the same time also had a refined taste with a herbal and refreshing flavor of lemongrass that I have never tasted anywhere else. As expected of a pastry chef! It seems that limited time offerings appear seasonally, so you will want to visit every time the seasons change.
In addition to gelato in a cup, milk and chocolate flavored ice cream sandwiches are also available, which can also be taken out. You can also enjoy them in the room where you are staying or at home.

Too many flavors to decide what to order! Premarche Gelateria

Last but not least is Premarche Gelateria, located on Sanjo Street near Nijo Castle.
The first thing that surprises you when you enter this store is the wide variety! More than 40 kinds of gelato are lined up in the showcase!
Moreover, there is a great variety of flavors available for vegans, including milk flavors that do not contain dairy ingredients and those that contain only fruit and sugar and no fats or dairy products of any kind.
We received "Tarama Brown Sugar and Minoyo Kinako, Kyoto's long-established kyoto kinako" and "Junmai Tamanomitsu Sake Kasu & Milk and Sweet Wine".
The richness of the molasses and the aroma of the kinako (soybean flour) made me feel very relaxed. The perfect balance of sakekasu, Hokkaido milk, and fresh cream was indescribable, and it opened my eyes to the deliciousness of sakekasu.
There is also a branch in Nakameguro, Tokyo, and you can also buy the same ice cream at several stores, so please check the website if you are interested.
