Kyoto was once the capital of Japan.
Ancient Japanese culture, performing arts, events, and food culture were born, and the industries that supported them developed and have been handed down to the present.
What names come to mind when you think of product brands from Kyoto?
Karacho (Kyoto karakami paper), Ariji (kitchenware such as knives and pots), Eirakuya (tenugui hand towels), and Shiratake-do (Kyoto folding fans) are all long-established shops that firmly maintain tradition, and you can buy products that are loved throughout the ages.
Among them, we would like to introduce a chopstick specialty store, "Gobashiji Ichihara Heibei Shoten".
About Chopstick Shop Ichihara Heibei Shoten
Heibei Ichihara Shoten is a chopstick specialty store located in Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto.
Approximately 1 minute walk from Karasuma station on the Hankyu line. Located in the heart of the city of Kyoto.
The company was founded in 1764. It has continued to this day as a chopstick maker for the Imperial Household Agency (in modern parlance, the Imperial Household Agency).
We select materials for all kinds of uses, including for meals, chakaiseki (tea ceremony), and cooking, and provide the best chopsticks for ease of use.
With a total of about 400 different types of chopsticks, this is a store that specializes in chopsticks only.
Signature product "Miyako Chopsticks
First, let us introduce the store's signature product, Miyako Chopsticks.
The material used is sooty bamboo (bamboo used as building material for ceilings, etc., which is smoked in hearths and kamado, and has become strong and resistant to warping after about 150 years of aging).
The shape is slender, and the chopstick tips are especially thinly sharpened. When you pick them up and use them, the chopstick tips fit snugly and you can easily pick up small objects.
Each set of Susu bamboo has a different color and texture, and some have knots.
It is also a fun time to browse and choose your favorite dishes in the store.
Heian chopsticks.
The "Heian chopsticks" invented by the owner of the restaurant are also a popular item.
The material used is madake bamboo from the Yamashiro region, which is in its third year of growth. The bamboo is tenacious and elastic, and the chopstick tips are delicately sharpened. The body of the hand is shaved into a round or square shape, making them easy to hold.
The photo shows a type with a wipe lacquer finish over the entire surface, which is resistant to discoloration and easy to care for.
Kyoto-style morizuke chopsticks
And last but not least, we introduce "Kyofu Moritsuke Chopsticks".
It is no exaggeration to say that legendary chopsticks are used by Japanese food chefs and food coordinators nationwide.
The chopstick tips are extremely delicate and one-quarter the size of normal chopsticks, making it easy to grab even the smallest of foods and serve them beautifully, down to the smallest of details.
The bamboo bark is left all the way to the thin chopstick tips, and the chopstick tips are slightly rounded, leaving the bamboo bark all the way to the tips, resulting in a strong chopstick.
When packing side dishes into the narrow spaces in a bento box, it is difficult to pack them with thick chopsticks, but with these chopsticks, there is no such stress!
The lengths are 33 cm, 28 cm, and 23 cm, and the hand part can be used like a spatula.
Although they are sold for serving, the shorter ones are very easy to eat for everyday meals.
There are also lacquered chopsticks from Wajima and other regions, and all the family's chopsticks were purchased here, including the lacquered chopsticks with mother-of-pearl inlay that the author is currently using.

Whenever I visit the store, the store owner carefully explains the features of each chopstick.
We love the fact that you can shop in a relaxed atmosphere, without feeling like you are on a high threshold, while checking the product in your hands.
Chopsticks are used every day. That's why we are committed to making tools that will be loved by people for a long time and that will enrich their lives. Why don't you buy these chopsticks for yourself or as a souvenir for your loved ones?
