Would you like to try some on a hot day? Two Kyoto water-yokans to buy while sightseeing

KYOTREAT Editors
The temperature is rising rapidly in Kyoto these days, and the days are getting hot enough to wear short-sleeved shirts. Walking around the city in the bright sunshine, you may be tempted to look for yokan (bean jelly) or warabimochi (bracken rice cake), which are easier to eat than dumplings or fluffy dorayaki (sweet dumplings).
Therefore, we would like to introduce two water-yokan that we recommend on a hot day. Both are gems that are rarely mentioned in guidebooks, but offer the elegant flavor of sweet red bean paste that is typical of Kyoto. Try them in an air-conditioned room or buy them as souvenirs.

Ponto-cho Surugaya "Take Dew

This cool-looking item is made by pouring mizu-yokan into a new bamboo that has just grown this spring. When the seal at the tip is removed, the pulled yokan comes out smoothly.

The taste is full of azuki beans and its gentle sweetness fills the mouth. The sweetness is not too strong nor too light, light and perfect for a hot day!

Since the shelf life is short, requiring refrigeration for 3 days, it is recommended for those who can eat it at their lodgings or home on the evening of purchase, or for those who can give the gift immediately after returning home. If you purchase several at once as a gift, such as a pack of 8 or 10, you can have them placed in a stylish bamboo basket.

Of course, orthodox yokan is also available, in three flavors: azuki, red, and tea. To get to the store, walk across the Shijo Ohashi Bridge from Keihan Gion-Shijo Station, then walk through Ponto-cho Dori for about 5 minutes. Please visit in conjunction with sightseeing at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Hanamikoji.

Nishitani-do "Mizuyokan

A luxurious dish consisting of two layers of mizuyokan and transparent agar. The sweetness of the mizuyokan is softened by the agar, making it easy to eat even on a hot day.

When in the box, it comes in a square board shape, so cut it into pieces when eating with a large crowd. Cut into strips and serve in glass or blue-colored containers for a summery look.

It has a shelf life of about 7 months from the date of manufacture, making it a good souvenir for those who have a few days to spare before handing it over. In addition to the orthodox azuki, we also sell "dark green tea.

There are two locations in Kyoto City: the Horikawa Imadegawa Higashi-iru factory store is easily accessible if you are going to the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and the Shinkyogoku Sanjo Shimoruru store is easily accessible if you are strolling around Shinkyogoku or Shijo-Kawaramachi area.
