Japanese food such as kaiseki, yudofu (tofu), and matcha (green tea) sweets are among the most popular foods to eat when visiting Kyoto.
If you have come all the way to Kyoto, you want to enjoy the delicacies that can only be found in Kyoto.
But there is one dish we recommend that you should try as much as Kyoto's specialties.
It's pizza at a very high level!♪
The author, who used to work for an Italian brand and visited Italy at least four times a year, recommends the following three pizzas from three different restaurants!
Table of Contents
■Pizzeria Marita
■Pizzeria Brown Blossom
Piccolo Mondo Yamada
■Pizzeria Marita

The first restaurant is Pizzeria Marita, a convenient 5-minute walk from Shijo Subway Station and Hankyu Karasuma Station.
Upon entering the restaurant, one's expectations are heightened by the presence of an Italian wood-fired oven and a pile of firewood!
The husband originally worked as a kabuki props chef, but was impressed by the taste of Neapolitan pizza he encountered on a trip to Italy, and decided to change jobs. After training in Italy, he decided to become a pizza chef.
The best item here is the Margherita!

The dough is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
The milky mozzarella melds with the tomato sauce, which is exquisite in its acidity and richness, and the simplicity of the dish makes it stand out for its deliciousness.
You can also change to buffalo mozzarella, so choose according to your mood or your wallet.
Although the variety of pizzas is limited, it is nice to know that for lunch, you can enjoy a Margherita with a drink for 1,000 yen, which is extremely reasonable. Incidentally, the D.O.C., topped with buffalo mozzarella, mini tomatoes, and basil, is 1,500 yen.
And there are also pizzas without tomato sauce!

The "Antikissi Polli" is a dish where you can directly enjoy the nourishing taste of ham, fresh arugula, and the dough with its assertive wheat flavor. Go with a few people and enjoy sharing the various delicacies.
There are also rice croquettes with cheese called "arancini" and pasta croquettes with bechamel sauce called "fritta.
You can also order it at lunch time as a side menu for 350 yen, so give it a try!

■Pizzeria Brown Blossom

The next restaurant is Pizzeria Brown Blossom in Kawaramachi.
Despite only opening in May 2022, it is slowly gaining popularity.
The pride of this place is the aromatic Neapolitan pizza dough made from carefully selected flour and baked in a wood-fired oven.
The owner himself prepares the pizza himself, fine-tuning the flour mixture and the amount of water according to the temperature and humidity, so that customers can enjoy it at its best. By using a wood-fired oven to bake the pizzas, he is able to provide pizzas with a crispiness and melt-in-your-mouth quality that cannot be achieved by kneading with a machine or baking in an electric oven.

There are four types of pizza on the menu in order to maximize the aroma and texture of the pizza dough.
They have narrowed it down to marinara, margherita, buffalo margherita, and quattro formaggi.

I ordered two items to share with a friend, one was the "Margherita".
Anyway, the dough has a great crispiness to it. It is savory and chewy, but not hard, and you can't stop eating it.
Waves of wheat, tomato, mozzarella, and basil deliciousness come together in unison~!

The other was a "marinara".
Marinara is Italian for "sailor's".
It is a simple pizza topped with tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and oregano, and is considered, along with the Margherita, to be the most typical pizza of Naples.
I wanted to taste the marinara, but I also wanted to eat cheese..." So I asked, "Can I have mozzarella topping on my marinara?" I asked, "I want to taste the marinara, but I also want to eat cheese..." and they agreed, and I was able to enjoy the marinara with mozzarella.
The restaurant is a genuine one that is particular about its ingredients and production methods, but the flexibility with which it accepts requests that are not on the menu was even more heartwarming.

Piccolo Mondo Yamada

The last restaurant is Piccolo Mondo Yamada.
It is located in a residential area about a 7-minute walk from Katsura Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line.
This Italian restaurant is operated by Yamada Seiyu, a company established in 1934 that manufactures and sells sesame oil and various sesame products.
“We propose ”sesame cuisine with an Italian taste.

Recommended is the monthly lunch with seasonal ingredients and plenty of sesame.
This very satisfying set consists of an assortment of appetizers, soup, pizza or pasta, dessert, and coffee or tea.
A black sesame sauce was used for the appetizer, which went perfectly with the vegetables.

The author chose "Yamada," a pizza bearing the name of the restaurant (laughs).
If you come to a sesame shop, you must have a sesame pizza.
White sesame, black sesame, gorgonzola, mozzarella, and honey are used to create a surprisingly good match between the savory flavor of sesame, saltiness of gorgonzola, and richness of honey! It will take you to a new zone of deliciousness.

My friend ordered the Black Sesame Carbonara. We shared a pizza and pasta, and this one was a direct taste of the creaminess of black kneaded sesame. This was another first for me!
Next to the restaurant is a store selling sesame products, such as "Sesame Oil Pressed First" and "Sesame Neri Neri (Sesame Paste)," which has a rich and creamy flavor that is addictive, and can be purchased.
The author was completely captivated by black sesame pasta, so he immediately bought some and went home.
These products are available at a number of stores, including department stores in the city and souvenir stores at Kyoto Station.
Also in Karasuma-Oike is Gomacro Salon Karasuma-Oike, a dining and café where you can enjoy body-friendly, ingredient-driven cuisine made with Yamada Oil's sesame products and plenty of delicious seasonal vegetables.
Please stop by for delicious chai and sweets made with sesame seeds!
