Kiyomizu Temple approach area

To reach Kiyomizu-dera Temple, one of the most popular tourist destinations, one has to climb up a slope to get there. On the way to Kiyomizu-dera, there are many stores selling souvenirs and food on Ichinen-zaka, Ninen-zaka, and Sanneizaka slopes. If you walk on different slopes on your way to and from the temple, you will encounter many stores.

Itoken/SOU・SOU Shimizu Store

Itoken/SOU・SOU Shimizu Store, a joint venture between two of Kyoto's hottest brands, has become one of the most talked-about stores in the area for its cute confections with pop designs.
Itoken" is a long-established confectionery shop founded in 1864, and "SOU・SOU" is a textile brand from Kyoto. It is a store where these different industries have collaborated beautifully.
The store sells sweets and sundries, and both the store and the sweets are cute and attractive! The "Amber Cider," served in an eye-catching cup with SOU-SOU's typical numeral motif design, is available for only one coin (500 yen) and has a fun jelly texture. The jelly has a fun texture, and above all, the colorful shades are wonderful and would look great on Instagram just by taking a picture of it. There are also many other sweets, such as sponge cakes in the shape of numbers, all of which are so cute that you will get lost in the crowd. There is also an Insta-worthy spot inside the store.... There is a fan-shaped window at the back of the store, so it will look even better if you take a picture with the drinks and sweets you purchased.

Particularly popular for takeout, wagashi on skewers are perfect for eating and walking around. The skewers are lined up in tiers with wagashi in the shape of cute faces and cute forms with indescribable expressions.
Each one has a different flavor, such as white sweet bean paste, yuzu nishikin, yokan, uiro, and green tea flavor, so you can enjoy the appearance and taste of each one.
The modern pop visuals and traditional Japanese sweets are especially popular among young women.

Review of Itoken/SOU・SOU Shimizu Store

I was so happy to see the sweets. I enjoyed some of the sweets that were fortune tellers.
The dumplings have a smiling face on the skewer. This is adorable.
There are a variety of products such as "numeral bladders," Japanese sweets on skewers, amber cider, and more. They are also recommended as Kyoto souvenirs.
Overall, the items are cute and reasonably priced, with many items priced at 500 yen.I hope to stop by again, as they have some SOUSOU-designed goods.
I am very happy with any of the sweets and drinks. Now I want to try the skewered dumplings for take-out.

Shimizu Kyoto Net

Kiyomizu Kyoami is located a short walk from Kiyomizu Gojo Station on the Keihan Railway. This small cafe has been open since 1982 as a souvenir shop and continues to be a familiar place in Kyoto, where you can enjoy coffee, green tea ice cream, specialty cream puffs, and other handmade sweets.
The product lineup includes cream puffs, ice cream shaped like eclairs, and soft serve ice cream.
It is available in green tea and vanilla flavors, both of which are delicious, but the Yatsuhashi Shu Matcha is a particular specialty. The outer dough of the cream puff is kneaded with Nikki in the Yatsuhashi style, giving it a crunchy texture. The inside is filled with matcha green tea cream, which makes you feel like you are in Kyoto. The cream is not too sweet, and everyone can taste it! This is a classic Kyoami sweet that everyone will enjoy!

Review of Shimizu Kyoami

You can enjoy handmade coffee and sweets. Cream puffs are a specialty and are available in vanilla and green tea. Both are delicious.
Ice cream and soft serve ice cream are available in matcha green tea, vanilla, and a mix. Matcha green tea seems to be popular for cream puffs. I am attracted to the color of matcha green tea.
The yatsuhashi puff has a strong yatsuhashi flavor and the matcha cream is luxurious with lots of cream.
I had it for the first time. The matcha green tea in the cream puff is a sure repeat. If you don't like the taste of the basic type of Yatsuhashi, it may be a little difficult to eat, but for those who like it, you won't be able to resist.
The choux was crispy and great. The green tea tasted great, and I was able to enjoy something that is typical of Kyoto's gourmet food.

■Arashiyama Area

This is an area that should not be missed by visitors to Kyoto for sightseeing. Nagatsuji Street, right in front of Arashiyama Station on the Randen Line, is the main street of Arashiyama, lined with restaurants and food stores for about 600 meters.

Yuba Cheese Honpo Arashiyama Honten

Yuba Cheese Honpo Arashiyama Honten is one of the restaurants in Arashiyama where you can wait in line. It is a popular place to stop by for a stroll in Arashiyama.
The food is prepared by the artisans of "Kyoto Saga Ryoriyaki Yoshiya," who have been making tempura for over 70 years in Arashiyama using fresh fish paste and seasonal Kyoto ingredients based on Japanese cooking techniques, so you can enjoy authentic taste at a reasonable price.
The most popular item at Yuba Cheese Honpo is Yuba Cheese. The fish paste is wrapped in yuba and deep fried to give it a light and crispy texture. The yuba skin is freshly fried and crispy, and the cheese inside the fish paste melts into the skin, creating an indescribable taste. Please try this new Arashiyama specialty.

Review of Yuba Cheese Honpo Arashiyama Honten

In addition to yuba cheese, there are yuba mentaiko, shrimp mayo, tako-negi sakre, and kawara red. The aroma of the restaurant makes it hard to decide which one to choose. But the Yuba Cheese is still the best.
I had the yuba croquette and the tofu croquette. We ate them while looking at the Katsura River, and both the taste and the view were great.
The yuba cheese is hearty and delicious! I will come back to eat again.
The main restaurant is located in Arashiyama, and there is also a Kiyomizu branch. I can see why people line up for this. The crispy texture matches the cheese.
I personally recommend the yuba cheese and mentaiko cheese. They are popular with all ages!

Kawakatsu Sohonke Arashiyama Store

Do you know that there is a store called "Kawakatsu Sohonke" about a 2-minute walk from Arashiyama Station on the Randen Line? This store opened in 1917 and is famous as a pickles shop in Kyoto for more than 100 years. The main store is located in Gojo, Kyoto, and there are about 14 stores in total, including the Kiyomizu-dera Omotesando store and the Kodai-dera Nichinenzaka store.
Besides selling pickles such as senmaizuke, shisozuke yam, and yuzuwari daikon, the Arashiyama store is famous as a place to eat and drink, and is one of the most popular pickle stores in the Arashiyama area.

Pickle stores are historical and seem to have a high profile. However, there is a popular food for eating that young people also casually visit and buy. That is "refreshing lemon cucumber.
Reasonably priced at 250 yen per skewer, this dish features freshly pickled cucumbers with a refreshing lemon flavor. At the store, many cucumbers on skewers are accompanied by slices of lemon, which is very appetizing.
A whole cucumber is skewered, and the crispy, crunchy cucumber gives it a refreshing taste.
The moderate saltiness of the lightly pickled cucumber, combined with the refreshing acidity of the lemon, creates a perfect balance of flavors. It is much tastier than cucumber eaten chilled, and even if you eat a whole cucumber, you will want another one! Even if you eat a whole cucumber, you will want another one!
Arashiyama is home to many gourmet eateries, and this "refreshing lemon cucumber" is a perfect accompaniment to a stroll through Arashiyama. Please try this pickle loved by men and women of all ages as you stroll through the area.

Review of Kawakatsu Sohonke Arashiyama Store

・Cucumber and lemon recommended for eating in Arashiyama. They are on skewers and reasonably priced. Delicious.
The cucumber tasted of lemon and was not just a pickle. It had a nice crisp taste.
This is the best pickle shop in Kyoto. The pickles made from seasonal Kyoto vegetables are delicious.
Pickled onions in wine, plum myoga, pickled radish, etc. are all delicious. Pickled cucumbers can be purchased for eating.
The restaurant was full of Kyoto-like atmosphere, with careful explanation of pickles as well as customer service and hospitality. I will come back again.

Kyo-Baam Arashiyama

Kyo-baamu" is a popular souvenir of Kyoto. Its specialty store, Arashiyama branch, opened on October 1, 2022.
The store is easily accessible as it takes only a few minutes to walk south from Arashiyama Station on the Arashiyama Randen Line. The store you see is a green and white store with an impressive atmosphere. The entrance is wide and easy for customers to enter, and although it is located in Arashiyama, a popular sightseeing spot, you will be able to enjoy selecting souvenirs in an open space.
Many people may say "Kyo-baamu" when it comes to Kyoto souvenirs. I am sure there are many people who say "Kyo-baamu" is the most popular souvenir of Kyoto. When you walk the streets of Kyoto, you will see many people carrying paper bags with "Kyo-baamu" written on them, so you can understand why they are so popular.

The baumkuchen originally called "Kyo-ba-amu" was launched in 2008. It is a soft type of baumkuchen made with a dough base made of 100% domestic flour and Kyoto-grown soy milk, combined with Uji green tea and sencha green tea, and baked in many layers. The soft texture and melt-in-your-mouth texture, the aroma of matcha green tea, and the mild sweetness of soy milk give this baumkuchen a unique taste, and many repeat customers keep coming back for more.

The Arashiyama store offers a wide variety of attractive products, including souvenir items in store-exclusive packages and matcha green tea sweets.
The "Eating and Walking Kyo-baamu" is becoming a new specialty, and as the name suggests, you can eat it while walking around. The easy-to-eat stick-shaped Kyo-baamu is ideal for eating while sightseeing in Arashiyama. The moist dough made of matcha green tea and soy milk melds in your mouth with the matcha fondant coating on the surface, leaving you speechless with its delicious taste.

Reviews of Kyo-Baamu Arashiyama Store

The size of Kyo-Baamu is easy to hold in your hand and eat. It was great because I could eat while sightseeing.
I bought not only souvenirs but also Kyo-ba-amu for myself. I ate it right then and there. It was moist and delicious.
Not only the standard items, but also black soybean flour "fluffy baamu" and Kyo baamu sable were sold. This is the best place to buy souvenirs. I would also like to buy some Kyo-baamu to eat and explore the area.
The store is spacious. The display was interesting with baumkuchen. Many people purchased the new specialty, Kyo-baamu, to eat.
Kyo-baamu is a popular souvenir. I visited the Arashiyama store for the first time to try the walking Kyo-baamu. The dough has a strong flavor, and the taste is the same as that of the souvenirs, but in a walk-around type.

Nakamuraya Sohonten

Nakamuraya Sohonten, which has been in business for over 60 years, is a beloved butcher store in Arashiyama. Its fresh Kyoto beef and freshly fried croquettes are the originators of Arashiyama's food culture.
While maintaining the taste that has been handed down over the years, Nakamuraya also started Nakamuraya Delicatessen in the spring of 2017, selling beef cutlet sandwiches and croquette sandwiched cobbler bread. The shop has become a place for interaction with the spirit of hospitality, as Arashiyama is a tourist destination.

These croquettes have been introduced in the TV media and are very popular with eaters.
In one corner of the store's glass cases of beautiful meats is a section of minced pork cutlets, kushikatsu, sausage, croquettes, and more.
The specialty croquettes are made with Hokkaido potatoes and ground beef, and deep fried in lard 100% oil. The sweetness of the meat, the crunchy potatoes, and the fluffy texture that comes after the crispy texture are the most delicious. The freshly fried croquettes are hot and irresistible. And yet they are reasonably priced, so you may want to buy them not only to eat while walking around, but also as a side dish at home.

Review of Nakamuraya Sohonten

The wagyu beef croquettes were too good to be true! It was indeed a butcher's croquette. The best.
Although it is a traditional restaurant, it is often featured on TV. It is always crowded. The croquettes are popular among locals and tourists alike. Delicious.
I bought a menchikatsu, croquette and ham cutlet. Personally, I found the menchikatsu and croquette to be excellent. They tasted like old-fashioned croquettes! It tasted like an old-fashioned croquette.
The freshly made croquettes were crispy. The meat and potatoes tasted delicious.
The restaurant was introduced by actress Riho Yoshioka. The croquette I had longed for. They were so crispy and sweet that I bought them in succession.

■Nishiki Market

Photo: Photo AC

Nishiki Ichiba, known as "Kyoto's kitchen," is a 400-year-old shopping street that focuses on food sales. There are many stores where you can enjoy the taste of Kyoto, and a variety of stores selling Kyoto vegetables, pickles, dried foods, fresh foods, obanzai, etc. continue for about 390 meters. Because it attracts many tourists, stores that are the talk of the town open one after another, and no matter how many times you visit, you will find something new.

Nishiki Ichiyo & Mamemono and Taiyaki

Nishiki Ichiyo & Mamemono & Taiyaki" is very popular for its taiyaki, which are characterized by their palm-sized, round eyes.
The cute-shaped taiyaki is said to have a shelf life of only "one minute" before the butter melts, so please eat it as soon as you purchase it.
The taste of taiyaki is
Sweet & Snacky
Custard
Butter with red bean paste
and more, all of which are delicious without missing a beat!

Review of Nishiki Ichiyo & Mamemono & Taiyaki

The combination of butter and red bean paste is the best. I want to come here again.
Anne Butter is a popular item. I guess sometimes they sell out. There were a lot of people there.
Nishiki Market is the place to go when it comes to eating. The expiration date is one minute too late.
Five kinds of taiyaki! You will want to eat them all.
I went there because I heard they had taiyaki with a shelf life of one minute and it was great. I would like to come back again.

Dr. Crunch.

The jumbo takoyaki are very popular at Dr. Karikari. The restaurant is always crowded with customers who are drawn in by the aroma of the sauce, even from the front of the restaurant.
It is characterized by a fluffy rather than crispy texture as the name implies, and the tenderness inside is very addictive. It has a more pronounced dashi (Japanese soup stock) flavor than ordinary takoyaki, giving it a Kyoto-like quality that is different from Osaka's takoyaki. There are several types of takoyaki available, so please take your time to examine them carefully.

Review by Dr. Crunchy

Dr. Crunchy not crunchy Dr. Crunchy (lol) too reasonable! It was delicious.
It is different from Osaka's. Kyoto-style takoyaki is the best.
The price is cheap. Lots of people come here every day. The aroma of the sauce is irresistible.
I think it is Dr. Torofuwa, not Dr. Crunchy. Nana Mizuki has been to this popular restaurant.
It is delicious. You can't miss it when you come to Nishiki Market in Kyoto.

Kiyoe before flowers

If there is one thing you want to eat while walking around, it is croquettes. At Hana Yori Kiyoe, you can enjoy croquettes in a variety of flavors.
The croquettes are popular for their taste that does not forget the Kyoto-like flavor, such as yuba croquettes and croquettes with green tea kneaded into them. Because they are deep-fried in olive oil, they are more refreshing than ordinary fried foods.
In addition to croquettes, surume-ika (squid) tempura and other dishes are also available, so please try them with a beer in hand.

Review by Kiyoe from Hana yori Kiyoe

Kiyoe than Hana", an olive oil and croquette store, was opened in 2012. The croquettes are lightly fried in high-grade olive oil.
I can't stop eating yuba cream croquettes. I can eat as many as I want.
There are many people. It's a small store, but it's busy. The croquettes fried in olive oil are delicious.
They have croquettes, but they also have matcha lattes and other items. I would like to come again.

If you are looking for a dessert-type food, I recommend "Nishiki Ichiyo"! If so, we recommend Nishiki Ichiyo. Here, you will find many products featuring Uji matcha green tea.
The shop offers a wide variety of items, including soft-serve ice cream, a Kyoto-style green tea, Uji green tea popcorn, and fondue dumplings, and is recommended for those seeking a bittersweet and refined taste. There are also Uji green tea sweets available in the store, so stop by for a refreshing break.

Review of Nishiki Ichiyo

I can't get enough of the ... sweets. The Uji green tea menu is abundant and delicious.
The food is great and looks too classy. You should stop by here.

fishing power

Uoriki" is a long-established restaurant that has been in business since 1919, selling mainly grilled fish.
You can see the fish being processed in the store, and many items such as tempura, cutlets, and teriyaki on skewers will make you hungry just by looking at them. We especially recommend the "Hamo-ten" (hamo tempura), which can be eaten inside the restaurant. This is a tempura of hamo from the Seto Inland Sea, with three hamo on each skewer, and while simple in taste, the crispiness and flavor are irresistible and superb. A simple yet irresistibly crispy and flavorful dish! It is a pleasure to be able to enjoy the taste of Kyoto at a reasonable price.

(in Northern Japan) conger eel

Hamo Shu is a relatively new restaurant that opened at the end of 2017. Although the name of the restaurant has "hamo" in it, what many tourists come for is the specialty "shrimp skewers". It has three large shrimp skewers stuck in it and is a must for shrimp lovers! You can eat them with salt or lemon, so you can really enjoy the shrimp flavor. Kyoto's local sake and other alcoholic beverages are also available, so please enjoy the luxury of tasting them while having a drink.

The soft-serve ice cream that is the talk of the town at these stores is the soft-serve ice cream that does not fall off even when it is upside down. The flavor is so rich and robust that it does not fall off even if it is upside down.
Soft serve ice cream is available in a variety of flavors, including silken tofu, black sesame soybean flour tofu, and Uji green tea tofu, with Uji green tea tofu being a popular item available only at the Kyoto Fushimi Inari store. Review of Kyo-Mouan

...The corn is well filled all the way to the tip and the flavor is mild. It's amazing that it doesn't fall off even if you turn it upside down!
The matcha green tea tofu soft serve was rich but not too sweet. The taste of matcha was good.
Kyo-Douan seems to be particular about domestically produced soybeans, and this soy milk sweet is truly a treat for the body. It's healthy, so be sure to try it.
