About Kyoto Chinese Sakai Honten

Kyoto Chinese Sakai Honten is a Chinese restaurant established in 1939 in Murasaki, Kita-ku, Kyoto. Three generations of parents and children have preserved the taste of the famous cold noodles.

In fact, when the restaurant first opened, it was a light meal cafe. As a remnant of this, although it is a Chinese restaurant, it also offers coffee and omelette rice dishes. The reason for the change from a snack cafe to a Chinese restaurant was because there were very few Chinese restaurants at that time. Thanks to this change, we can now enjoy the cold noodles.

What kind of cold?

Sakai's cold noodles are characterized by two things.
The first is its noodles.
The noodles are firm and quite thick, with just the right amount of elasticity when you bite into them, and the flavor of flour escapes through the nose.
I took out fresh noodles this time,
Boiling time is about 8 minutes. Since the noodles are quite thick, I was convinced that it takes that long to boil them.

The second is the special sauce. It has a fruity sweetness to the sesame flavor, and is sweet and spicy, intertwined with mustard and sourness. It is an original flavor not found in any other Chinese restaurant.

If this is what is entwined with the thick, shikko-stiff noodles, it is a taste that is unstoppable!

Toppings include a choice of chashu pork or ham, with cucumber and shredded nori seaweed.
The noodles and sauce have a semi-impact, so the extremely simple ingredients enhance the flavor.

These cold noodles and Chinese noodles can be taken out and you can choose whether you want them boiled or fresh, which is great for those who don't have time to eat in. They are also available by mail order, so you can order as many as you like in any season!

Other than cold noodles are also recommended!

Other menu items include fried gyoza, mapo doufu, tentsin rice, hachi bao chai, shrimp mayo, kimchi fried rice, and a wide variety of other classics. The cold noodles, Chinese noodles, fried noodles, and yakisoba are also available, and it is nice to know that set meals with fried rice and mini salads are also available.

Incidentally, there is also a store in the same Kita Ward called "Misono no Hashi Sakai," which is independent from the main store, and cold noodles are available there as well. However, there is no mustard in the sauce, and the taste is different, so it is good to compare the two.

The nearest station is Kitaoji Station, about a 15-minute walk. It is located in the Shin-Omiya shopping street and is marked by a large stuffed bear. Why not try one when touring the northern part of the city, including Kinkakuji Temple and Daitokuji Temple?
